Isaac Randolph land grants, 1793-1794.

This collection consists of grants of 20,000 acres in Washington County, Georgia, and 5,000 acres in Franklin County, Georgia, granted to Isaac Randolph. These grants are part of the Pine Barren Speculation and were granted by Governor George Mathews. The Pine Barren Speculation occurred from 1789 until 1796, when it was overshadowed by the Yazoo Fraud. During this time, the governor of Georgia gifted and sold land contained in the "pine barren" counties to landowners, promising the land to be fertile and prime for farming; in fact, the land was agriculturally useless. The amount of land dispersed during Pine Barren Speculation was far greater than the actual acreage contained in this area. While the limit on the amount of land a family could own stood at 1,000 acres, many of the landowners involved in the scandal claimed over 20,000 acres each.
